A baby’s nap will change as they get older. They will spend slightly more time awake in between naps but may also sleep for longer during naps. This is due to their development. As they start moving around more, they may require a slightly longer sleep. Generally they’ll have a nap in the morning, a nap around lunchtime and an afternoon nap.

Usually the shorter awake time will be the one before their morning nap.

Awake times for babies 0-12 months

Knowing awake windows for your baby can make a huge difference to their overall sleep. The amount of sleep they have during the day will impact how well they sleep at night. If they take a while to settle at bedtime and wake during the night, the chances are they’re not getting enough sleep during the day.

0-6 weeks up to an hour

6-12 weeks  up to 1 hour 15 minutes

3-4 months 1 hour 30 minutes

4-5 months 1 hour 45 minutes

5-6 months  2 hours

6 months 2 – 2.5 hours

7-8 months 2 hours 45 minutes

9-10 months 2.5 – 3.5 hours

11-12 months 2.5 – 4 hours

The 3rd nap sometimes drops around 6-8 months but this depends on how long their other two naps are. If you think they still need the third nap, keep it. If your baby is within these awake and sleep times and is still unsettled it’s worth looking at their digestion, the environment in which they sleep, feeding times and how they settle to sleep.
