Description

At Primary School, the ability to read and write well is an essential skill to acquire. Children learn and practise many of the skills that are required for reading and writing during their pre-school years, through singing nursery rhymes, making music, communicating with others, having regular story time and enjoying role play.

As parents and carers, we can also help our children by pronouncing sounds (phonemes) correctly; this will make blending easier when your child learns to read and write. Where possible, sounds should be sustained e.g. sss, ffff, nnn and where not possible, try and avoid making “uh” sounds e.g. “buh” and “cuh” when saying sounds after consonants.

Suggestions for exploring the pronunciation of single sounds

  • Play ‘What’s in the bag?’:  Put some objects in a drawstring bag and pull one item out at a time. Emphasise the initial (first) sound of the name of the object by repeating it, e.g. “c c cow”.
  • Foam and magnetic letters are a fantastic resource for exploring sounds. Try playing a game of Hide and Seek; hide some letters for your child  to ‘seek’ and place them on a baking tray.
