My name’s Sarah Matthews, I’m a subspecialist fertility doctor based at the Portland hospital in London.

I’m going to have a chat with you today about doing a sperm test and interpreting the results.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about how to do your best sperm test. So yourself and your partner had been trying for a baby for awhile.

One of the initial investigations that we do is to look at the sperm. Sperm count will be an issue in a third of couples. And so when you prepare, you want to get the best results possible.

It’s a bit daunting, but before you do that test, consider cutting down on your alcohol stop smoking if you can, or at least cut down for a couple of weeks.

Don’t be smoking spliffs the night before because it will still all the boys and girls and they just don’t want to go anywhere when they do that.

And if you’re overweight, losing a little bit of weight beforehand is a good idea.

I know those are longer term lifestyle things, but they really can impact on the results and believe me, the results will impact on you.
