As a mom you may be wondering what to eat now that your baby is here. What types of food will nourish your baby, keep yourself healthy and strong and shed the extra pounds that you gained during your pregnancy?
As a Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant this is a subject that I am asked about so often, both in the office and on social media. During pregnancy you hear lots of talk about what to eat, but not too much instruction is given after delivery. Most women do not have a visit with their health care provider until that brief six week check up.
Interestingly, I learned very little about nutrition while I was studying to be a Certified Nurse Midwife and even less in my training as a Lactation Consultant. Unfortunately, my doctor colleagues didn’t learn much on this topic either, a fact that may leave you feeling unsupported as you plan your meals in the postpartum period.
