In this article I will share my 5 top tips on how to motivate yourself when you’re having a bad day. There are some days where getting out of bed can feel like a monumental struggle and that sleepy feeling just won’t shift. I was really fighting against this feeling a few days ago (and failing) so I thought, if I can’t beat it then I will work with it.

Set the bar low

Firstly, acknowledge you are having a bad day and give yourself permission to have a rough day. It’s okay to feel like this every so often. It might not always be possible but if you can, do what you need to do and try not to push yourself to achieve more than you absolutely must.

Be kind to yourself

Treat yourself the same way as you would treat a friend who is feeling low and do some little things to cheer yourself up throughout the day. This can be anything from treating yourself to your favourite tea/coffee/juice, to writing positive words of affirmation on a sticky note and putting it on your computer monitor.

Take a mindful moment

If the prospect of tackling your to do list is causing a headache, pause for 5 minutes. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Giving yourself time to step away from everything and taking some deep breaths of fresh air can really help to re-focus your mind.

Talk or write about how you feel

There’s definitely something in the old saying “a problem shared is a problem halved”. Talking about how you feel with friends, family or colleagues can bring clarity to issues, as they might be able to offer some advice and support. If you would rather not talk to anyone then writing down how you feel can be a huge help. Find a notebook and write away. Putting your thoughts down on paper can often help to make sense of jumbled thoughts your head and make space for other ideas.

Envisage how good you will feel after completing the task

Think about the final result; try to picture yourself at the end of the day having achieved your goals. Feels good right? Now keep that image in your mind and refer to it whenever you hit a wall or feel your motivation drop.

You’ve got this!
