Firstly, congratulations on your news that you’re expecting twins as I’m guessing that’s why you’re here! It’s going to be such a special journey and you should try to cherish all of it. The news that you’re going to have two babies not one, can take some time to sink, and it’s only natural to have lots of questions. So, I thought I’d share my experience of what I felt when I was first told I was carrying twins…

I was 8 weeks pregnant when we found out we were expecting our identical twins – that was 14 years ago. I was in shock and speechless, in fact I cried because a wave of new emotion came over me like I’d never felt before. I laid there on the couch as the news sank in and I instantly had a list of questions growing in my head already such as,

  • How will we cope?
  • What will we do with 2?
  • How will I carry them?
  • How will I give birth to them?
  • Where will they sleep?
  • How will they sleep?
  • How will I manage when my husband goes back to work?
  • How will I feed them?
  • Will I love them both the same?

I noticed the sonographer was talking to us but it was muffled like I was in a bubble. The more they spoke, the more nervous I got. She was saying things like,

  • Your pregnancy won’t be straight forward
  • You will be consultant led
  • There may be complications
  • You won’t go full term
  • You will be induced
  • You could have a cesarean section
  • You are high risk because they’re in the same sack and they are sharing a placenta

It was a lot to take in….

If this is all sounding familiar to you then I’m here to tell you it’s completely normal to feel that way but enjoy every second of it, a miracle has happened and those babies you’ve been blessed to carry are so special.

So whatever feelings and emotions you’re experiencing, push the negatives to one side and focus on the positives because it’s the most special time. Feel lucky because you get to see your babies more often at regular scans and will have an album of scan photos to collect throughout your pregnancy.

I can only share my story and experiences which is a positive one and I’m here to support and guide you the best I can on your journey.
