No supplement in the world is going to do what it says on its beautifully designed packaging if you’re hungry, dehydrated and not moving that beautiful body of yours.

The answer to upgrading flat energy is not a hack or a quick fix. It’s not sexy or expensive. It’s not popular like Jackson Marcehtti or and it’s not sold by Goop.

Sometimes I like to tell you things that you don’t want to hear. Are you ready?

Here are my top 5 things that’ll get you and your energy from flat to fabulous, and most importantly, keep it there.

1. FOOD

  • More of it not less
  • More beans and lentils
  • More tahini and pumpkin seeds
  • More broccoli and green beans
  • More food that makes you feel good
  • More food that powers you up
  • More food that tastes good
  • More food that creates connection
  • Less brown and beige

2. WATER

  • Hydrate before you caffeinate
  • Poop not moving? Drink some water.
  • Skin feeling grimy. Drink some water.
  • Exhausted? Drink some water.
  • Forgot why you walked into the living room? Drink some water.
  • If in doubt, check the colour of your pee. Aim for straw coloured urine that doesn’t stink.

3. MOVEMENT

  • To charge a car battery, it needs to move. It’s the same with you.
  • It doesn’t need to be a 3 x week cardio sweat fest that makes you more strung out that a mum who’s been told it’s school picture day today (your small human needs a wash, a haircut and a jumper without a porridge splodge on it!)
  • Experiment! Try aerial yoga, dancing, rowing, boxing, reformer pilates, walking, roller blading, tennis, netball or swimming.

4. SLEEP

I know sleeping can be interrupted by small humans, your bladder or your partner’s snoring, so instead of focusing on the quantity of sleep you’re not getting, let’s focus on the quality of sleep you’re getting.

  • Keep blue light devices out of the bedroom (beds are for the 2 S’s – sleep and sex, although small human bed invasions can make these impossible).
  • Brain dump in a journal so you don’t wake at 4:32am thinking about dirty socks, whether Valentine’s Day is a hallmark holiday that you can ignore or do you need to go source a gift that says, “I love you but pick up your wet towel before I throw it at you.”
  • Wash your face.
  • Read.
  • Have an orgasm.
  • Get into a routine that shows your brain that it’s time for sleep.

* I will say, that even if you do get a full night’s uninterrupted sleep (me jealous?!) you might still not want to get out of bed in the morning and your energy might still be more flat than fabulous – if that’s the case, we need to talk *

5. FUN

Who remembers being a teen human and thinking, “I can’t wait to be an adult. I can do what I want.” Ah, teenage innocence. Adulting is serious business:

  • Over priced mortgages to pay
  • Humans to keep alive
  • Bosses to keep happy
  • Surfaces to wipe
  • Laundry. There’s always laundry to disappear under.

Where can you get some fun in? Teenage you might suggest knocking back some shots and hitting the dancefloor. But teenage you doesn’t know that parenting with a hangover is not fun.

Play cards. Play dress up. Play it silly.
It’s good for the soul.

Supplements for energy?

I get asked every day about what supplements to take for more energy and to give your immune system a boost (you don’t want to boost your immune system, trust me on that one).

Every day I disappoint exhausted women who are hanging on by a thread and want something that’s going to make it all go away, like now.

I get it.

I’ve been there. Chuck in a bald spot and some varicose veins too. I’m not going to sell you a lie. Instead I’m going to make sure that you move from exhausted to energised (and stay that way) by making small, simple appropriate changes that add pleasure and don’t eliminate fun and joy.

Feeling exhausted and spending your ££’s on supplements that you might as well lick for the help they’re going to do doesn’t have to be your normal.

Instead it’s about doing things your way so that in 10, 20 and 40 years, you’re still going to know what to do when your energy is flatter than yesterday’s stale sweet potato pancake.

If you’re knackered, eat healthily and looking for a supplement as the green icing on the cake. We need to talk, as I guarantee there’s some nutrition and lifestyle changes that’ll make the biggest difference.
