Eating disorders are serious mental ill health conditions that can affect anyone and can have a tremendous toll on health, relationships, education and work. Whilst eating disorders are most likely to start in childhood/teens, they often run a long-term course into adulthood. It is also not uncommon for eating disorders to start in late adulthood.

This talk with Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Nihara Krause, is informed by psychological evidence and her clinical experience of working within specialist eating disorders services, being a lecturer in eating disorders and creating mental health tech to support eating disorders.

Dr Krause will cover the following areas:

  • A definition of what comprises an eating disorder and the most common types, including differences noted in children and adults as well as gender differences.
  • A look at some facts and figures and common risk factors, with a specific reference to work triggers and maintaining factors.
  • What the early signs and symptoms of an eating disorder are.
  • Adult onset eating disorders – the same or different?
  • Talking to someone about their eating disorder and how to support them, with focus on supporting children and teenagers, a partner, friend, work colleague.
  • What steps can be taken to manage an eating disorder, available resources and supporting someone with a long-term condition?
